Marvel unveiled their latest lineup at San Diego Comic-con. Among the announcements of new movies and shows like She-Hulk, Secret Wars, etc. Marvel also showcased a teaser for the upcoming movie Blank Panther sequel, named Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The teaser pulled us back to the 2018 Black Panther movie, introducing T’Challa and the kingdom of Wakanda. The first movie was directed by Ryan Coogler, who will be directing the sequel as well. The movie is noted to be one of the best MCU movies and was lauded for its acting, story, production, and soundtrack. It is also marked as culturally significant because it included African culture at its core.
But Chadwick Boseman, who played King T’Challa and became a beloved part of the MCU fanbase, was diagnosed with Colon Cancer in 2016. He continued to play the character and kept his illness private. Sadly, he passed away in 2020, leaving his majestic legacy of a great actor and an excellent human.
After his passing, Marvel Studio CCO Kevin Fiegi confirmed that they were working on the Black Panther sequel. Instead of casting a new actor, they opted for changing the script. Now we are in 2022 getting the teaser for the Black Panther sequel, and one big question remains. Who will be the next Black Panther?
Before trying to answer the main question, we should appreciate Marvel’s effort. The whole teaser felt like an excellent tribute to its previous titular character and the man behind the legacy. As the teaser started, we almost felt every character feeling the loss of T’Challa.
It was incredibly hard for Marvel to take the series forward without Boseman. But they are showing confidence in the talent of director Ryan Coogler, who looks to add several new elements to the movie.
In the teaser, we see many instances of a water world and even an Aztec Pyramid. We also see a scene of childbirth in water. It’s confirmed by Marvel that the villain of this movie will be Namor. Namor has been an old character in Marvel Comics. His powers and abilities are very similar to Aquaman from DC comics. He is the king of Atlantis Kingdom, can breathe underwater and talk to fish.
In the movie, the setting of Atlantis looks to be changed to Aztec civilization. We possibly see Namor in the Aztec helmet and armor. We also saw several shots of characters with blue skin and wearing masks.
We then see a military conflict, as men with guns try to take over a Wakandan lab. They are then beaten up by the Wakandan force, Dora Milaje. We also see T’Challa’s mother, Queen Ramonda, going to the United Nations.
It looks like she will be closing her nation from the world again. Which is the polar opposite of what T’Challa planned to do. This could set up why other nations will try to send their military force to capture Wakanda for the precious metal Vibranium.
With the double threat of Namor and the world military, the kingdom of Wakanda is shown to be pushed towards a big war. In the final teaser shot, we finally see a figure extending its claws like Black Panther, in a fight with Namor.
Marvel hasn’t made it clear who will be the next Black Panther. But looking at the shot, we can make an educated guess. The armor of the new suit looks a lot similar to Shuri’s (T’Challa’s sister) gauntlets in the first Black Panther. Shuri can take up the mantle because of the dire circumstances.
The teaser has increased excitement in the Marvel fanbase, especially those who were skeptical of how Marvel will go ahead after the untimely passing of Boseman.
