Ant-Man 3 will turn up the stakes because Scott will go up against Kang. However, this unlikely match was indeed the right decision by Marvel
“Ant-Man 3” will raise the stakes in an Ant-Man film to unbelievable proportions for the first time ever. After all, we will see Ant-Man fight Kang, the master of time. But this battle was the right decision taken by Marvel Studios. Let us discuss why.
In an interview with SFX Magazine, “Ant-Man 3” writer Jeff Loveness discussed the stakes of the movie and how Scott Lang is out of his depth in this one. He praised Paul Rudd’s acting skills and commended him for making the tone of the film serious. Loveness said:
“Rudd does some pretty incredible acting. There’s a shift that happens. Once Kang shows up, once Scott realizes just who he’s dealing with, the movie starts to pivot. You see it in Rudd’s eyes. Scott’s a goofy, playful guy, but he’s been in jail twice, he’s fought in these big Avengers things, and you can see his eyes slowly change –’‘Oh, I’m not dealing with Walter Goggins from the last movie, this is something else!'”
The writer said that even though the film begins as a playful adventure, it quickly spirals into a rivalry between Kang and Ant-Man, a feud no one saw coming. As per him:
“You start to see that come over him. ‘These are real stakes. I’m not here with Captain America and Thor. I’m here with my family. And I am completely out of my depth.’ So what starts as a fun, playful adventure pivots into this kind of unlikely rivalry. It’s kind of fun to have Ant-Man and Kang be nemeses together.”
MCU fans are loving the unlikely nature of the rivalry between Kang and Ant-Man. After all, choosing Scott Lang to be the first hero who fights Kang is an interesting decision. But it does work because it’s a literal David vs Goliath battle taken up a notch. Also, not only is Scott Lang not combat ready but he’s almost always goofy and out of his depth in this battle.
We have already seen in the trailers for “Ant-Man 3” that he will get beaten up by Kang. However, Scott also thinks quickly on his feet and his line in the second trailer about how he doesn’t need to win, just has to ensure that Kang loses as well shows his ingenuity. However, if the plot leaks are correct, then this time, even street smart thinking won’t be able to save Scott and his family.
