Every Star Wars fan worth their lightsaber knows that Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) once owned the Darksaber. But she isn’t the black blade’s rightful owner.

During season 2 of The Mandalorian, her character’s main goal was to defeat Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) and get her saber properly back. But ultimately, the Darksaber wound up in Mando’s hand instead.

Episode 5 of The Book of Boba Fett gave us all a refresher on the legendary blade. It’s a classic weapon with a rich history in a galaxy far, far away.

The History Of The Darksaber

We have seen the blade in episodes of Star Wars: Rebels, The Mandalorian, and of course Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The Armorer explained that the Darksaber was made by Tarre Vizsla, a Mandalorian Jedi.

The saber overtime became regarded as a symbol of their home planet and it’s believed to be the key that will bring back their lost civilizations.

Eventually, the blade found its way to Moff Gideon. But now it’s with Din Djarin. The Armorer’s Darksaber lesson also worked as a reminder of the events of season 2 of The Mandalorian.

In that season, Bo-Katan had the Darksaber. But she doesn’t have ownership of the blade since she doesn’t have a legitimate claim to it. As the Armorer said, Bo-Katan believed that she could wield the sword due to her Mandalorian sword.

But after the civil war happened on the planet in Rebels, the Darksaber was given to her. The decision to give Bo-Katan the sword and make her its new owner was supported by various Mandalorian clans.

But this doesn’t mean that it’s hers.

The Armorer was right when she said that the saber wasn’t really Bo-Katan’s. As per the rules, the Black Sword needs to be won by combat. But Bo-Katan didn’t get the sword like this.

Since she didn’t fight to get the sword, the Armorer doesn’t recognize Bo-Katan as its true owner. However, Bo did try to earn it the correct way by going after Moff Gideon.

But, in the end, Mando was the one who defeated Gideon first in battle. And in doing so, he became the saber’s rightful owner. Season 2 of The Mandalorian made it clear that Bo-Katan herself understood that she couldn’t claim the weapon as her own.

Mando gave it to her. But she didn’t take it since she knew that taking it would be a complete violation of the rules. This means that if Bo-Katan ever wants to be recognized as the leader of her people, she will have to fight her former ally.

Only if she fights and wins can the sword be hers. Since that is the only way for her to get the Darksaber so Din Djarin will have to anticipate a challenge from Bo-Katan.

Who knows, maybe the challenge will come in the rumored Bo-Katan Kryze solo series on Disney+. So what will happen next? That remains to be seen.
