The Marvel Cinematic Phase 4 is drawing the audiences’ attention by playing out the stories a little differently. Phase 4 includes several TV shows and movies, while also focusing on establishing characters already in the MCU. In addition, the franchise is also introducing newer characters that will carry on the future of Marvel Studios quite fantastically. The latest movie by Marvel, Eternals, ended with more than just one cliffhanger, leaving the audiences excited for the sequel.
Chloé Zhao made her MCU debut with Eternals. The movie features its title team, an alien race created by the Celestial Arishem. The Eternals were sent to Earth centuries ago to protect humankind from the dangers posed by the Deviants. Throughout their time on Earth, the Eternals stayed in the back lines and assisted humankind is progressing. However, they were not allowed to interfere in other matters, which is why they stayed out of the war that vanished half the Earth following Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War.
As time passed, the Eternals decided to go separate ways and live individual lives. But when the Deviants returned, the Eternals teamed back up to stop the disastrous event known as “The Emergence”. The team of Eternals is formed by Sersi (Gemma Chan), Ikaris (Richard Madden), Sprite (Lia McHugh), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), Druig (Barry Keoghan), Gilgamesh (Don Lee), Thena (Angelina Jolie), and Ajak (Salma Hayek). However, as the end of the movie approached, we saw a couple of them leave the screen. While the ones that survived faced a surprising end.
The team of Eternals and Arishem- The Celestial
With the help from Sersi’s transmutation powers and Phastos’ plan to use the Uni-Mind, the Eternals successfully stopped the birth of a Celestial called Tiamut. Sersi turned the Celestial into marble with her powers. After which, she chose to continue living on Earth. Along with Phastos, who had already made a family for himself with a loving partner and a kid, and Kingo, who was pretty adamant about not giving up his fortunate acting career.
Meanwhile, Sprite willingly converts into a human with Sersi’s help, using the energy of the Uni-Mind. The remaining Eternals namely Thena, Druig, and Makkari leave Earth on the now repaired Domo to look for more Eternals. Their purpose behind this was to tell them the truth about their origin and their real mission.
But at the end of the movie, we see Arishem make a terrifying appearance. outside the orbit of Earth. He abducts Sersi, Phastos, and Kingo to access their memories. Based on this, he would decide whether or not humankind was worth sparing. However, Arishem lets the Eternals in the Domo escape. It is safe to assume that this is because they decided to leave planet Earth.
In the many centuries that the Eternals spent on Earth, every member of the team had certain relationships with humans. They experienced various emotions with humankind and watched them evolve and grow. But it is also true that while some Eternals shared a stronger connection, some did not.
Among the entire team, Sersi was the most empathetic. She had developed an emotional connection with human beings, and she always chose to assist those in need. Phastos was the only one from the group, however, to have found himself a wholesome life on Earth with his family. He lived a normal life in a beautiful home with his husband Ben (Haaz Sleiman) and their son Jack (Esai Daniel Cross).
This is why he was seen being reluctant in leaving them behind to fight alongside the Eternals, as he did not want to put them in harm’s way. Meanwhile, Kingo had created a thriving career as a Bollywood star, and he had been in it for decades now. This is why it makes sense that the three of them decided to continue living on Earth.
The Celestial Arishem
The ultimate goal of Arishem is to dig into the memories of humans of Earth so that he can pass a judgment. It is likely that he only took these three Eternals and not the others because they have a better and deeper connection to humans and have lived closer to them for longer. Yet it is strange that Arishem would let the others go. Especially because the ones leaving Earth in Domo are journeying towards finding other Eternals and revealing the truth about the Celestial’s mission.
This could be a huge threat for Arishem as well as other Celestials. This part of the movie can easily be passed for a loophole. Like every other movie, Eternals also leaves room for inconsistencies. The act of Arishem only taking Sersi, Phastos, and Kingo might be a thoughtful one if the idea is to lay the groundwork for the sequel. But it is still unbelievable that Thena, Druig, and Makkari managed an easy escape from their supposedly all-powerful creator.
