Everyone who has seen “Game of Thrones” or has by heart followed the books authored by legendary fiction novelist R.R. Martin recognizes a few things concerning the prince, princess, queen, and Kings of the Targaryen Household: they are blonde, passionate, and love to ride dragons. Their favorite phrase is the menacing Fire and blood, while their emblem is a three-headed dragon.

They had a lengthy reign as rulers of Westeros until Dany’s older brother got together with the aunt of the Stark children, setting off a whole conflict. As things stand in the novels and the television, Daenerys is the only surviving “legitimate” Targaryen. She has three dragon offspring and no sense of the future, but she was eager to reclaim her father’s reign.

The origin of these gorgeous blond dragon riders is shrouded in secrecy. They appear to be the sole ones who can live peacefully with the enormous, burning lizards. I’ll give you a quick rundown of House Targaryen’s background and explain how they survived the Doom of Valaryia.

Where Do Dragons Come From?

Historically, prior to the unification of the seven kingdoms, there was a capital known as Valyria. This settlement was located on an island in Essos, which is the Fantasyworld equivalent of the Mediterranean Sea. Originally, Valyria was home to a culture of laid-back, platinum-blonde, purple-eyed farmers. But then, the narrative goes, the herders saw dragons skulking in the volcanic ring nearby.

Moreover, you can’t merely stumble across dragons and then return to your previous occupation of tending cattle. Valyrians used sorcery to tame and then educate dragons to be used as kill machines. The little nation of Valyria quickly expanded into the massive and deadly Valyrian Dominion.

The majority of Western Essos was under the control of the Valyrian Dynasty, who constructed highways and (probably) aqueducts while terrorizing the locals with their newfound firebreathers. However, Valyria did not have a single monarch, but rather a number of honorable, dragon-owning dwellings that were always contending with one another for control. In comparison to the other great households, House Targaryen was just picking up pieces.

How Targareyens Survived

As a result, the elder dragonlord households didn’t mind when little Daenys Targaryen began experiencing disturbing dreams concerning Valyria being consumed by fire. Fortunately for the Targaryen family, Daenys’ father had faith in her prophecies. He uprooted his family and their beasts to the westernmost frontier of the Valyrian Dominion, Dragonstone.

For around a decade, the Targaryens camped around there, seeming very suspicious, while the rest of the dragonlords continued to enjoy life in the old peninsula. However, the entire region and its people were wiped out by a cataclysmic disaster dubbed the Doom of Valyria.  Martin has purposely left this detail ambiguous; it may have been a major volcanic explosion, some sort of mystical gibberish, or even a third moon slamming onto the Earth.

With the exception of Dorne, the Targaryens conquered and annexed all of the Seven Kingdoms, unified their governments, and exterminated the heads of any governing families who rejected to submit.

They established the city of King’s Landing and made the Iron Throne from the swords of their adversaries. In other words, it is true that only people of Targaryen lineage had the authority to sitIron Throne, yet the Targaryens had no real hold on Westeros other than the capacity to wipe out anybody they despise with “Drakares”

The Targaryens’ reign as conquerors of Westeros has been marked by violence and bloodshed. They revolted against one another and fought armed conflicts. They imprisoned the remaining creatures till they all perished after killing each other’s beasts.

Then they attempted to employ fire magic to resurrect them, but they all were burnt to a crisp in the attempt since Targaryens aren’t naturally immune to flames; Dany’s famous fire walk was an aberration caused by extraordinary magical conditions.
