House of the Dragon episode 3 introduces us to Jason Lannister and his twin Ser Tyland Lannister. This is the family that fans love to hate in the Game of Thrones. So who exactly is Jason Lannister and will he appear in future episodes of House of the Dragon?

Lord Jason Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock, appears in the third episode of House of the Dragon as a possible suitor for Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. King Viserys approves of the match and sends him to woo Rhaenyra during the hunt. He tries to pursue her by giving her wine and talking about Castlerly Rock and how he would build a dragonpit if she were to become his wife. However, Rhaenyra shuts him down due to his prideful and arrogant nature. Moreover, she simply does not want to get married on her father’s terms.

Jason also gave King Viserys a red and gold spear as a gift for Aegon’s second birthday. The spear was later used in the episode to kill the stag that was captured during the hunt. He once again asked for Rhaenyra’s hand in marriage completely ignoring her wishes and sentiments. King Viserys also describes him as a prideful man who is quite full of himself.

His twin, Tyland Lannister serves in the King’s Council at the Red Keep in King’s Landing. He is seen during the episode, talking to the King regarding the battle at the Stepstones. He tries to reason with the King and explain to him the severity of the situation so as to convince him to send aid and take action against the Triarchy. Funnily enough, the actor who plays both Jason and Tyland Lannister on screen in House of the Dragon, Jefferson Hall, also appeared in Game of Thrones. He played Ser Hugh of the Vale in Game of Thrones season 1.

Jason Lannister is the Lord of Casterly Rock, the Shield of Lannisport, the Warden of the West and the head of House Lannister. In the books too, both Jason and Tyland Lannister vied for Rhaenyra during a feast that was held at Casterly Rock. They gave her gifts and tried to impress her but without any success. He was married to Lady Johanna from House Westerling and had 6 children with her. As is the custom in House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, Jason also fathered children with a mistress. Despite being a handsome and successful Lord, his vain and boastful nature makes him very easy to dislike.

Episode 3 is most likely not the last time we will be seeing Jason Lannister. In the books, he also plays an important role during the Dance of the Dragons. Ser Tyland Lannister, Jason’s twin, was the master of coin for King Aegon II Targaryen. This simultaneously brought Jason  into the picture as he opposed Princess Rhaenyra’s claim to the Iron Throne. They hoped that supporting Aegon would benefit them and favor them in the King’s council. In fact, Lord Jason Lannister went as far as acquiring a thousand knights, seven thousand arches and men for combat with arms to bolster the greens. Jason eventually died during the Battle at the Red Fork when he was fatally injured. After the death of Jason Lannister, his younger son Loreon took over Casterly Rock.
