Superman: Legacy is on the horizon, marking the official commencement of the DC Universe under the creative guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran. In a departure from the previous portrayal by Henry Cavill, this fresh iteration of the Man of Steel promises to be a game-changer for DC fans. Here’s what we know about its release, plot, cast, and more.

Release Date: Superman Takes Flight

Superman: Legacy

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios and the director of Superman: Legacy, has boldly declared that this Man of Steel movie will serve as the “true beginning of the DCU.” Fans can mark their calendars for July 11, 2025, as the date when Superman will return to the big screen in a new avatar.

Superman: Legacy won’t stand alone in 2025, as it will be followed by another highly anticipated DC film, Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2, scheduled for release on October 3. However, it’s worth noting that despite being labeled the official starting point of the DCU, Superman: Legacy won’t be the inaugural release. Before its arrival, the animated Creature Commandos series is set to debut on Max, expected sometime in 2024.

James Gunn submitted the first draft for Superman: Legacy just before the writers’ strike began on May 2, 2023. Filming is scheduled to commence in January 2024, contingent on the conclusion of the actors’ strike. If all goes according to plan, fans can look forward to experiencing Superman’s new legacy in 2025.

Cast & Characters: A Fresh Lineup

Superman: Legacy

David Corenswet, known for his roles in Pearl, The Politician, and Hollywood, will step into the iconic role of Clark Kent/Superman, following Henry Cavill’s departure. Sharing the spotlight as Lois Lane is Emmy-winning actress Rachel Brosnahan, renowned for her work in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

James Gunn has yet to announce the actors who will portray billionaire villain Lex Luthor, Daily Planet editor Perry White, and Clark Kent’s photographer friend Jimmy Olsen. While Luthor is confirmed to appear in the film, he is not expected to be the primary antagonist. Actors such as Bill and Alexander Skarsgard, along with Nicholas Hoult, are reportedly in contention for the role of this iconic DC villain.

Additionally, fans are speculating about the inclusion of Krypto the Superdog in the movie, marking the character’s return after appearing in DC League of Superpets.

The cast will also introduce four more Justice League heroes: Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl (Kendra Saunders), Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific (Michael Holt), and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Superman may also join forces with members of The Authority, setting the stage for their ensemble movie.

Plot: An Exploration of Superman’s Identity

Superman: Legacy

James Gunn has revealed that Superman: Legacy will be a “workplace origin story” but not a traditional origin tale for the Man of Steel. The film will delve into both his Kryptonian heritage and his upbringing as Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas. This narrative approach will emphasize his dual identity, as Gunn describes him as “the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way,” guided by human kindness in a world where kindness is often considered old-fashioned.

While the main antagonist remains undisclosed, there are hints pointing to Brainiac’s potential involvement, alongside the enigmatic Lex Luthor. Gunn aims to treat these characters with dignity and compassion, promising an emotionally charged and surprising storyline.

Superman: Legacy holds the promise of a fresh take on the iconic superhero, with a compelling exploration of his character, powers, and place in the DC Universe.

Why Henry Cavill Isn’t Returning as Superman

Superman

The news of Henry Cavill’s recasting as Superman came as a surprise to many, especially given his return to the role in 2022’s Black Adam after a five-year absence since Justice League in 2017. James Gunn clarified that the decision was made because the film would focus on an earlier phase of Superman’s life, aligning his age with that of David Corenswet, who is approximately 30 years old.

Although Henry Cavill won’t portray Superman in this new phase, Gunn revealed that he had a productive meeting with the actor, discussing exciting opportunities for future collaboration within the DC Universe. While the Man of Steel undergoes a transformation, Cavill’s association with DC may continue in different roles, adding a layer of intrigue to the ever-evolving world of DC films.
