Disney+’s newest release, Peter Pan & Wendy, has fallen victim to review bombing on IMDB. This issue is not new to Disney, as its past productions have also suffered from similar problems. Moon Knight, Eternals, and Toy Story spin-off Lightyear have all faced review bombing for diverse reasons, including referencing historical events, LGBTQIA+ representation, and the same-sex romantic subplot, respectively. Similarly, Warner Bros.’ The Last of Us and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad were both hit by review bombing for various reasons.

Peter Pan & Wendy Remake Receives Negative Reviews

On the same day as its release, Peter Pan & Wendy, Disney’s newest live-action remake of the classic Neverland tale, received a barrage of negative reviews on IMDB. The movie, which features Jude Law as Captain Hook, has a 50.9% one-out-of-ten rating, with 728 out of 1430 total votes.

Interestingly, the film received a lower rating from international audiences, with a 3.3 rating compared to 4.3 domestically. This trend was not observed in Disney’s other live-action remakes. Also, older age groups had higher ratios of review bombers than the younger age groups.

Critics Review Peter Pan & Wendy Negatively

Critics have also given negative reviews of the movie, with an audience score of only 28% on Rotten Tomatoes. In contrast, 68% of critics enjoyed the film. The remake has been criticized for being too “politically correct,” and Wendy’s character appears older than her age. Alexander Molony’s appearance as Peter Pan has also been criticized.

Some valid criticisms were made, with many calling the film “boring” and calling for more original movies from Disney. Some fans are unhappy with the live-action remakes and are calling for an end to them.

Disney’s Live-Action Remake Problem

Disney’s decision to release both Pinocchio and Peter Pan & Wendy as streaming originals has also received criticism, and some critics see a larger problem with Disney’s live-action remakes. Disney has released nine remakes since 2019, which will increase to ten with the release of The Little Mermaid this summer. With the last two remakes, Pinocchio and Peter Pan & Wendy, receiving negative reviews, Disney’s live-action remakes may be a cause for concern.
